Indian entrance exams, by stream

India runs a separate entrance exam for almost every field. Which one you sit depends entirely on the career you're aiming for — so start from the job, then work back to the exam. Here's the map:

🛠️ Engineering

JEE Main → NITs, IIITs, GFTIs (and the gateway to JEE Advanced → IITs). BITSAT for BITS. Seat allocation happens through JoSAA counselling — not an exam, a choice-filling process.

🩺 Medical

NEET-UG is the single entrance for MBBS, BDS and allied courses across India. Your rank decides government vs private vs abroad — see what your NEET score can get.

CAT for the IIMs and top MBA schools. An MBA is also a common route into product management and consulting.

How to choose the right exam

Don't sit an exam because "everyone does." Work backwards from the outcome:

  1. Pick the career you want (engineering, medicine, management, design, law).
  2. Find the degree that leads there — and whether you'll do it in India or abroad.
  3. Then the exam falls out: JEE for engineering, NEET for medicine, CAT for an MBA, and so on. For abroad, it's IELTS/GRE/GMAT instead.

Is JoSAA an entrance exam?

No. JoSAA is the counselling and seat-allocation process for IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs — it uses your JEE Main/Advanced rank. You don't "sit" JoSAA; you fill choices and get allotted a seat round by round.

Which exam do I need to study abroad?
