JEE Main Rank to College 2026 — IITs, NITs, IIITs & GFTIs
Your JEE Main rank decides your college — but with 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs and 28+ GFTIs, "mera rank pe kaunsa college milega?" is genuinely hard to answer by hand. This guide gives you the rank bands, real JoSAA 2024 closing ranks, and a free predictor that does the matching for you.
JEE Main rank vs college type — the broad picture
A rough map of which institute tiers open up by All-India rank (for competitive branches; core branches close later):
| Rank range (CRL) | IITs* | NITs | IIITs | GFTIs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 – 1,000 | Top IITs (top branches) | All NITs | All IIITs | All |
| 1,000 – 5,000 | Newer IITs / core branches | Top NITs | Top IIITs | All |
| 5,000 – 25,000 | Rare (via Advanced) | Most NITs | Most IIITs | All |
| 25,000 – 1,00,000 | No | Core branches / OS-HS seats | Some IIITs | Most |
| 1,00,000+ | No | Limited | Limited | Some |
*IITs admit via JEE Advanced (qualified through JEE Main); ranges shown are indicative for Gender-Neutral, OPEN. Category, home-state and branch choice shift these substantially.

How to choose colleges based on your rank
- List everything in range. Run your rank through the JoSAA Predictor to get safe / target / reach seats.
- Filter by branch. Decide how much you value branch vs institute brand — CSE at a new IIT vs core at an old one is a real trade-off.
- Check career outcomes, not just rank. Compare where graduates actually land on the Rankings page.
- Order your choice list most-wanted first — JoSAA always allots the highest-preference seat your rank reaches.

Frequently asked questions
What rank is required for IITs through JEE?
IITs admit via JEE Advanced. CSE OPEN closed around 68 (Bombay) to 656 (Hyderabad) in JoSAA 2024; other branches and newer IITs close much later, so a wide Advanced-rank range can still get an IIT seat.
Can I get an NIT with 50,000 JEE Main rank?
Often yes — core branches and Other/Home-State seats at many NITs stay open past 50,000. Top-NIT CSE closes far earlier (Trichy ~1,224). Check with the predictor.
How do I predict my JEE Main college?
Enter your rank, category, gender and quota in the free JoSAA Predictor — it matches against 10,900+ official 2024 closing ranks.
JoSAA vs CSAB — what's the difference?
JoSAA runs the main joint counselling (IIT/NIT/IIIT/GFTI). CSAB Special Rounds fill leftover NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats afterwards (not IITs).
How does J2E help?
The predictor turns your rank into a college list; the Rankings page lets you choose by career outcome before locking choices.
