NEET Rank vs College 2026 — MBBS, BDS & AYUSH Guide

Published 17 June 2026 · honest, indicative rank bands — always verify on MCC

Your NEET rank decides your medical seat — but with 700+ medical colleges and separate All-India and state counselling, "is rank pe MBBS milega kya?" rarely has a clean answer. This guide gives you indicative rank bands by college type, explains AIQ vs state quota, and is upfront that exact cutoffs move every year. Use it to set expectations, then confirm on the official MCC and state portals.

NEET rank vs college type — indicative bands

These are broad, indicative ranges for the All-India Quota, OPEN category. Your category and home-state quota can shift them a lot:

College typeIndicative AIQ rank band (OPEN)
AIIMS Delhi / top government MBBSTop few hundred – few thousand
Government MBBS (broadly)~ up to 15,000–50,000
State-quota government MBBSHigher than AIQ; varies by state
Private / deemed MBBSOpen well beyond government cutoffs
Government BDSGenerally beyond the MBBS cutoff
AYUSH (BAMS / BHMS / BUMS)Extends further still

Indicative only — drawn from public MCC and state counselling trends. Actual 2026 cutoffs depend on the number of qualifiers, seat-matrix changes, category and domicile. Verify on mcc.nic.in and your state counselling portal.

Course vs rank — MBBS, BDS, AYUSH

If MBBS is out of reach at your rank, strong medical careers are still open:

AIQ vs state quota — apply through both

The All-India Quota (AIQ) is 15% of government seats, open to everyone and counselled by MCC. The other 85% are state-quota seats, counselled by each state for its domicile students — often with lower cutoffs for home-state candidates. Register for both: your home state may give you a government seat your AIQ rank wouldn't.

How to shortlist by your NEET rank

  1. Map your rank to the bands above for AIQ and your state.
  2. Apply to both AIQ and state counselling — never just one.
  3. Weigh government vs private on fees and bond rules, not just brand.
  4. Keep BDS/AYUSH as genuine options if MBBS is borderline.

Frequently asked questions

What NEET rank is required for MBBS in India?

Indicatively, government MBBS via AIQ needs roughly top 15,000–50,000; top colleges and AIIMS Delhi close within the top few hundred to few thousand. State-quota and private seats go higher. Verify on MCC.

Can I get a government college with a 50,000 NEET rank?

Possibly — especially via home-state quota or in less-saturated states; BDS/AYUSH are also realistic. AIQ government MBBS options narrow around there.

AIQ vs state quota?

AIQ is 15% of govt seats (anyone, MCC-counselled); 85% are state-quota (domicile, state-counselled, often lower home-state cutoffs). Apply to both.

What rank for BDS or AYUSH?

Higher (less competitive) than MBBS — government BDS beyond the MBBS cutoff, AYUSH further still. Varies by state/year.
