The JoSAA 2026 questions Reddit keeps asking — answered with data

Updated 8 June 2026 · pulled from r/JEE, r/JEENEETards, r/BTechtards thread patterns · answers cite real JoSAA 2025 R6 closing ranks

Every JoSAA season the same questions trend on Reddit. The threads fill with opinions, most of them circular. Below are the questions actually being asked, with answers from real data and links to the J2E tools that resolve them. No counselling pitch. Open the predictor, plug in your rank, get out.

JoSAA 2026 round 1 is live. If you have a JEE rank, run it through the JoSAA seat predictor now — uses 2,650 closing-rank rows from JoSAA 2025 R6.

Can I get IIT Bombay CSE at AIR 70?

Close call. IIT Bombay CSE closed at AIR 67 in JoSAA 2025 Round 6 (OPEN, Gender-Neutral, CRL). 2026 closing rank is likely to move ±15 ranks. AIR 70 is on the edge — probably reach, possibly target.

Put IIT-B CSE at preference #1. Add IIT-D CSE (close ~102), IIT-M CSE (~175), IIT Bombay Math & Computing (~120) as preferences #2-#4. If IIT-B CSE doesn't materialise, you still land at IIT-D CSE or IIT-B M&C — both elite.

NIT Trichy CSE vs IIT Dhanbad Mechanical — which is better for placements?

NIT Trichy CSE wins, clearly. Median Year-1 CTC: NIT Trichy CSE ₹16L, IIT Dhanbad Mechanical ₹10L (Source: NIRF 2024 placement reports). The 1.6× gap widens through year 5 because software skills compound faster than core-mechanical skills in the Indian market.

The "IIT > NIT always" framing collapses once you account for branch. After your first job, recruiters look at CSE or Mechanical on your CV, not the institute it was learned at. Pick branch over brand.

What is freeze, slide, float in JoSAA — which one should I pick?

Freeze = lock this seat, no upgrades, you're done. Float = keep this seat for now, upgrade me automatically if a higher preference (different college OR branch) opens next round. Slide = keep this college, upgrade me only if a better branch opens at the same college.

Default to Float in Round 1. Switch to Freeze only when you're at a seat you'd take over the gamble of losing it for an upgrade attempt. If you're in your top 3 preferences, Freeze is safe by Round 3.

How does home state quota work? Should I use it?

Home State (HS) quota seats at NITs / IIITs / GFTIs are reserved for students whose 12th board state matches the institute's state. HS closing ranks are typically 500–2,500 ranks higher than All-India (AI) closing ranks at the same NIT.

Example: Karnataka student at AIR 1,700 can't get NIT Surathkal CSE on AI (closes ~1,274) but can get it on HS (closes ~2,400). Put your home-state NIT HS rows above equivalent AI rows from other states in your preference list. Skipping this is a free upgrade you didn't take.

My rank is 8,000. Can I get any IIT branch?

Yes — but not the popular branches at the top IITs. At AIR 8,000 (JEE Advanced, OPEN, GN), realistic IIT options: core branches (Civil, Metallurgy, Chemical) at IITs BHU / Roorkee / Guwahati / Indian School of Mines Dhanbad, plus some lower-rank-IIT branches.

The honest call: NIT Trichy / NIT Warangal CSE (both close ~1,100–1,200 on JEE Main) might serve you better than IIT Civil for software placements. Run both through the predictor and compare year-1 CTC outcomes.

Should I do BTech at IIT BHU or take MS abroad after NIT?

Depends entirely on branch. NIT Trichy / Warangal CSE + future MS abroad typically beats IIT BHU Mechanical/Civil on lifetime earnings for software-track careers. Reverse is true if your goal is core engineering.

Median year-1 CTC: NIT-T CSE ₹16L vs IIT-BHU Mechanical ₹10L. After 5 years and a self-funded MS, the NIT CSE path is usually ahead by ₹40–60L in cumulative earnings.

How many JoSAA preferences should I fill?

Between 50 and 80. First 5–10 = your reach options (low chance, but what you really want). Middle 20–40 = your target zone (most likely final allotment). Bottom 15–25 = the safe tail — GFTI + state-CS seats well below your closing rank as insurance.

The tail costs nothing and saves you from a no-allotment outcome. ~6% of candidates each year end up with no JoSAA seat because they skipped the tail.

Will JoSAA 2026 closing ranks be higher or lower than 2025?

Expect ±300 ranks for IITs and ±1,500 for NITs / IIITs. The band structure stays the same year-on-year because the seat matrix changes slowly. The mock allotment 24–48 hours before lock-in uses real-time 2026 data and is the best estimate — treat it as truth, not the previous year.

If 2026 closing ranks widen unexpectedly (more candidates skip JoSAA than usual), reach preferences open up. Float through Round 1 to capture this.

Is IIIT Hyderabad CSE worth more than a lower IIT?

For software placements: yes. IIIT Hyderabad CSE places at median ₹22L year-1, comparable to IIT-B / IIT-D CSE (Source: IIIT-H placement report 2024). Lower-tier IITs in core branches place at ₹8–12L. The brand differential closes; the branch differential remains.

IIIT-H CSE closing rank ~AIR 784 (JEE Main CRL) — accessible at ranks where IITs at the same level would only give Civil / Chemistry / Mining.

If I don't get any JoSAA seat, what should I do?

Three paths. (1) CSAB Special Round — round-up for unfilled NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats after JoSAA closes. Closing ranks widen 1,000–2,500 in CSAB. (2) State counselling — KCET (Karnataka), MHT-CET (Maharashtra), TNEA (Tamil Nadu) — NIT-adjacent CS at state colleges that often beat private NITs on placements + cost. (3) Direct entry to good private CS — VIT, SRM, Manipal, BITS-Pilani (BITSAT-route).

For software-track careers, India's median payback is already strong (₹15–22L starting CTC against ₹8–12L total program cost) — better than most abroad MS options. Don't borrow ₹50L+ for an MS abroad just because JoSAA didn't work.
