Spring 2027 Intake in the USA for Indian Students

Updated 7 September 2026 · priority deadlines are running now, final deadlines close November 2026

The Spring 2027 intake in the USA for Indian students starts in January 2027 and is the nearest live entry point if you missed Fall 2026. Applications opened between July and August 2026, priority deadlines fall between September and October 2026, and final deadlines run to around November 2026 — though some programmes closed as early as 1 August. Arizona State University, Rutgers University and the University at Buffalo are among those running Spring 2027 admissions. Spring is a genuinely smaller round, and the trade-off is not competition, it is money: most assistantship and fellowship funding is allocated in the Fall cycle, so a Spring start is usually a more expensive start.

Spring 2027 USA deadlines

Deadlines are set per department, not per university. A single university routinely runs a September deadline for one master's and a November one for another. These are the sector-wide windows.

The funding trade-off

This is the real difference between Fall and Spring, and it rarely appears in intake listings.

US departments allocate teaching assistantships, research assistantships and fellowships on an academic-year basis, and that allocation happens for the Fall cohort. A Spring admit arrives after the budget is committed. You are not barred from funding — you are competing for whatever was left unspent, and realistically you are waiting until the following Fall to be considered properly.

For an MS that changes the maths materially: a fully self-funded first year against a partially funded one is often a ₹15–25 lakh swing. If your plan depended on landing an assistantship in semester one, Spring is the wrong intake for that plan.

What Spring 2027 costs in INR

Tuition, per year₹17L–₹38LVaries hugely between public and private
Living, per yearUSD 12,000–20,000₹10.6L–₹17.6L
SEVIS feeUSD 350₹30,800
Visa application feeUSD 185₹16,300

Rupee figures use GBP 1 = ₹105, CAD 1 = ₹62, AUD 1 = ₹55, USD 1 = ₹88. Rates move; treat every rupee number as an order of magnitude, not a quote.

A two-year MS therefore lands around ₹55–110 lakh all-in before any funding. The counterweight is post-study work: 12 months of OPT, extended by 24 months for STEM degrees, which is 36 months total and still the longest practical post-study runway of any major destination. Full workings are in the honest payback math on an MS in the USA.

Who should take Spring 2027

Take Fall 2027 instead if you need funding from day one, if your programme only admits in Fall, or if you want the full autumn recruiting cycle for internships. Compare against the January 2027 UK intake, where a one-year master's costs less but now carries only an 18-month Graduate Route, and the January 2027 intake in Canada.

Spring 2027 Intake in the USA for Indian Students — FAQs

What is the deadline for Spring 2027 intake in the USA?

Priority deadlines fall between September and October 2026 and final deadlines commonly run from 15 October to 1 November 2026, with some programmes accepting to 1 December. A few closed as early as 1 August 2026. Deadlines are set per department rather than per university, so verify on the specific programme page.

Which US universities offer a Spring 2027 intake?

Arizona State University, Rutgers University and the University at Buffalo are among those running Spring 2027 admissions, and most large public universities offer some Spring entry. The Spring catalogue is smaller than Fall, so confirm your specific programme admits in Spring rather than assuming the university-level intake covers it.

Is it harder to get funding in the Spring intake?

Yes, and this is the main drawback. US departments allocate assistantships and fellowships on an academic-year basis for the Fall cohort, so a Spring admit arrives after the budget is committed. You are competing for unspent funds, and realistically waiting until the following Fall for proper consideration. That can be a INR 15-25 lakh swing on an MS.

How much does a Spring 2027 MS in the USA cost for Indian students?

Roughly INR 55-110 lakh all-in for a two-year MS before any funding: tuition of INR 17-38 lakh a year, living costs of USD 12,000-20,000 a year (INR 10.6-17.6 lakh), a USD 350 SEVIS fee and a USD 185 visa fee. Public universities sit at the lower end, private ones well above it.

Does a Spring 2027 start affect my OPT?

No. OPT is 12 months, extended by 24 months for STEM degrees, and it is tied to completing the degree rather than to which semester you started. A Spring start simply shifts your OPT window by one semester. At 36 months for STEM it remains the longest practical post-study runway among major destinations.

Should I take Spring 2027 in the USA or January 2027 in the UK?

The UK is cheaper and faster: a one-year master's against a two-year MS. The USA pays more and gives far longer post-study work, 36 months for STEM against the UK's 18 months for anyone starting in January 2027. If you need funding in semester one, neither intake is ideal, and Fall 2027 in the USA is the stronger application.
