NIRF Rank vs JoSAA Cutoff: Are There Really Hidden Gems?
Mostly no, and the data is blunt about it. Across the IITs, the correlation between NIRF rank and CSE closing rank is 0.97 out of 1. Choice filling has already priced them. Among NITs, IIITs and GFTIs the correlation drops to 0.69, and that is where the remaining value sits.
“Undervalued college” lists are a staple of counselling season. We tested the idea properly: join every NIRF 2025 ranked institute to its official JoSAA closing rank, then measure whether the two actually disagree. For the most part they do not.
How closely rank and cutoff track each other
Rank correlation, where 1.00 would mean the cutoff order is identical to the NIRF order:
- IITs: 0.97 across 21 matched institutes. Effectively no slack.
- NITs, IIITs and GFTIs: 0.69 across 23 matched institutes. Meaningful slack.
The IIT figure is the striking one. Applicants collectively rank the IITs almost exactly the way NIRF does, which is what you would expect of a small, intensely researched set of options that lakhs of students fill choices over every year. If you are hunting for an underrated IIT, the market has got there first.
Below that tier the picture loosens, because the option set is much larger, location matters more, and far fewer people compare parameter scores.
A rule before reading the tables
IIT seats are allotted on JEE Advanced ranks. NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats are allotted on JEE Main ranks. Those are different exams over different candidate pools, so the two sets of closing ranks are never combined here and should never be compared across the tables.
IITs: NIRF rank against JEE Advanced cutoff
| NIRF 2025 rank | Institute | Graduation Outcomes | JEE Advanced closing rank | Total score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | IIT Madras | 82.29 | 159 | 88.72 |
| 2 | IIT Delhi | 81.67 | 116 | 85.74 |
| 3 | IIT Bombay | 87.06 | 68 | 83.65 |

| 72 | IIT Bhilai | 65.13 | 6,516 | 50.37 |
| 77 | IIT Dharwad | 63.79 | 6,375 | 48.61 |
Read down the two rank columns and they move together almost step for step. The largest disagreement in the whole set is IIT Patna, ranked 19 by NIRF and closing at 3,144, which is a handful of positions easier than its quality would imply. That is the best case, and it is small.
NITs, IIITs and GFTIs: NIRF rank against JEE Main cutoff

| 21 | NIT Calicut | 79.12 | 4,482 | 63.05 |
| 28 | NIT Warangal | 73.64 | 2,186 | 61.05 |
| 42 | Malaviya National Institute of Technology | 70.23 | 4,711 | 57.45 |
| 44 | Visvesvaraya NIT Nagpur | 71.94 | 5,795 | 56.58 |
| 49 | NIT Durgapur | 77.92 | 8,765 | 55.94 |
| 50 | NIT Silchar | 70.15 | 11,930 | 55.91 |
| 53 | NIT Patna | 73.81 | 14,442 | 53.89 |
| 54 | IIEST Shibpur | 70.93 | 14,635 | 53.63 |
| 55 | NIT Jalandhar Jalandhar | 61.88 | 10,957 | 53.38 |
| 62 | Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology | 74.36 | 4,191 | 52.15 |
| 65 | NIT Delhi | 71.26 | 8,018 | 50.79 |
| 66 | Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology | 62.65 | 7,113 | 50.77 |
| 73 | NIT Srinagar | 69.97 | 21,839 | 50.23 |
| 81 | Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology | 73.26 | 8,830 | 48.26 |
| 82 | NIT Jamshedpur | 75.79 | 7,944 | 48.25 |
| 83 | NIT Meghalaya | 62.31 | 20,039 | 48.21 |
| 85 | NIT Kurukshetra | 66.64 | 6,000 | 47.98 |
| 86 | NIT Raipur | 66.26 | 13,177 | 47.59 |
| 97 | NIT Hamirpur | 65.33 | 12,236 | 46.10 |
| 99 | NIT Puducherry | 61.86 | 18,515 | 45.83 |
Here the columns genuinely diverge. NIT Kurukshetra ranks 85 in NIRF but closes at 6,000, tighter than several institutes ranked well above it, because proximity to Delhi drives demand the ranking does not measure. In the other direction, several institutes with solid outcomes close much later than their scores suggest.
The useful cut: best outcomes for the easiest entry
NIRF rank is not what you want to optimise anyway. If the goal is a job, the parameter to read is Graduation Outcomes. So here are the institutes with the highest GO score among those whose cutoff is easier than the median for their own exam pool.
| Institute | Pool | Graduation Outcomes | CSE closing rank | NIRF rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NIT Durgapur | JEE Main | 77.92 | 8,765 | 49 |
| NIT Patna | JEE Main | 73.81 | 14,442 | 53 |
| Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology | JEE Main | 73.26 | 8,830 | 81 |
| IIEST Shibpur | JEE Main | 70.93 | 14,635 | 54 |
| NIT Silchar | JEE Main | 70.15 | 11,930 | 50 |
| NIT Srinagar | JEE Main | 69.97 | 21,839 | 73 |
| IIT Patna | JEE Advanced | 78.40 | 3,144 | 19 |
| IIT Mandi | JEE Advanced | 78.29 | 3,118 | 26 |
| IIT Ropar | JEE Advanced | 75.18 | 2,379 | 32 |
| IIT Bhubaneswar | JEE Advanced | 75.07 | 3,685 | 39 |
| IIT Jodhpur | JEE Advanced | 70.43 | 3,061 | 27 |
JEE Main rows shaded. Median CSE closing rank in the JEE Main pool is 8,018; in the JEE Advanced pool it is 1,708.
NIT Durgapur is the clearest case on this data. A Graduation Outcomes score of 77.92 puts it above the median IIT on that parameter, and it closed at 8,765 in JEE Main. Its NIRF rank is 49, held down by research output and a Perception score that reflects survey recognition rather than what happens to its graduates. Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology is a similar shape at 73.26 and 8,830.
What this does and does not prove
- It is CSE only. Computer Science is the most oversubscribed branch everywhere, so it is where cutoffs are tightest and the market most efficient. Other branches will show more slack.
- The two datasets are a year apart. NIRF 2025 scores against JoSAA 2024 closing ranks, because those are the latest published editions of each. Cutoffs move between years.
- Only 44 of the NIRF top 100 could be matched, because private and deemed universities do not admit through JoSAA at all. SRM, VIT, BITS and Thapar have no closing rank in this system.
- A high Graduation Outcomes score is not a salary figure. The median salary sits inside it and NIRF publishes that figure separately, per institute, in its data sheets — see the placement-data comparison.
How to use this in choice filling
- Stop looking for underrated IITs. At a correlation of 0.97 they do not exist in any useful quantity. Fill them in roughly the order the cutoffs already imply.
- Look harder in the NIT and IIIT band, where the correlation is 0.69 and outcomes and difficulty come apart.
- Sort by Graduation Outcomes, not rank, then check the cutoff is reachable.
- Apply home-state quota last, since it can move you a whole band at no cost. Our CSE at NIT vs IIIT guide covers that trade.
Jobs and study abroad
- For placement, the outcomes-per-difficulty table above is the practical output of this whole exercise. Pair it with branch-wise salaries, because branch still moves the number more than institute does.
- For research or an MS abroad, the calculation inverts: you want a high Research and Professional Practice score, which tracks NIRF rank far more closely than outcomes do. IIT vs NIT on the parameter scores breaks that down.
- If nothing reachable looks good, price the alternative honestly with the payback calculator or engineering pathways abroad after JEE.
Frequently asked questions
Do NIRF rank and JoSAA cutoff agree?
Closely, and more closely than most applicants assume. Among the 21 IITs we could match, the rank correlation between NIRF position and CSE closing rank is 0.97, which is near-perfect. Among NITs, IIITs and GFTIs it is 0.69, so there is real slack there but not at the top.
Are there hidden gem engineering colleges?
Among IITs, essentially no. Choice filling has already priced them, so a well-ranked IIT is not going to close at an easy rank. Among NITs and IIITs there is genuine slack: NIT Durgapur posts a Graduation Outcomes score of 77.92 while closing at 8,765 in JEE Main.
Can I compare an IIT cutoff with an NIT cutoff?
No. IIT seats are allotted on JEE Advanced ranks and NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats on JEE Main ranks. They are different exams with different candidate pools, which is why the tables here are kept separate and never combined into one list.
Which college gives the best outcome for the easiest cutoff?
On this data, NIT Durgapur in the JEE Main pool: Graduation Outcomes of 77.92, above the median IIT, at a closing rank of 8,765. MANIT Bhopal is comparable at 73.26 and 8,830. In the JEE Advanced pool, IIT Patna and IIT Mandi score just above 78 at closing ranks near 3,100.
Why do some colleges close harder than their rank suggests?
Location and brand momentum, mostly. NIT Kurukshetra ranks 85 in NIRF but closes at 6,000 in JEE Main, tighter than institutes ranked well above it, because proximity to Delhi drives demand that the ranking does not measure.
Sources and method
NIRF ranks, parameter scores and totals come from the official NIRF India Rankings 2025 engineering table, checked 25 August 2026. Closing ranks come from the official JoSAA 2024 Round 5 opening and closing rank file held in our database: Computer Science and Engineering, OPEN category, gender-neutral seats, All India quota for IITs and other-state quota for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. Institutes were matched by normalised name; 44 of the NIRF top 100 matched, the rest being institutions that do not admit through JoSAA. Correlations are Spearman rank correlations computed by us within each exam pool. Jobs to Education is not affiliated with NIRF, JoSAA or the Ministry of Education; see our terms.
