How the NIRF Ranking Is Calculated: All Five Parameters Explained
NIRF scores every institute out of 100 on five parameters, then weights them: Teaching 30%, Research 30%, Graduation Outcomes 20%, Outreach 10%, Perception 10%. The weighted sum is the published total. In engineering, placement and salary together account for just 13% of that total.
Most explanations of NIRF stop at the five parameter names. That is not enough to use it. What decides a rank is the sub-metrics inside each parameter, and once you convert those to a share of the final score, the ranking turns out to measure something quite different from what most students assume it measures.
The five parameters and what each is worth

Each parameter is scored out of 100 first, independently. Only then is the weight applied. That matters: an institute can post a near-perfect 95 on teaching and still rank outside the top 20 if research and perception are weak.
We checked the arithmetic against all 100 institutes
NIRF publishes the weights and the parameter scores but not the calculation. So we ran it. Taking the 2025 engineering table, applying 0.30 / 0.30 / 0.20 / 0.10 / 0.10 to every institute's five scores reproduces the published total for all 100, with a maximum deviation of 0.017 points, which is rounding in the published two-decimal figures.

So the score is fully reproducible. Anyone telling you a NIRF rank is a black box has not tried the multiplication.
What each sub-metric is actually worth
This is the table nobody publishes. Multiply each sub-metric's marks by its parameter weight and you get its true share of the final score.

Median salary is 5% of a NIRF score
Read the top of that table again. Publication quality is worth 12% of an engineering institute's NIRF score. The reputation survey is worth 10%. Median salary is worth 5%.
Add the two employment-linked sub-metrics together, placement and higher studies (8%) plus median salary (5%), and you get 13.0% of the total. Research as a whole is worth 30%, more than twice that.
None of this makes NIRF a bad ranking. It makes it a ranking of institutional quality, weighted toward research, which is exactly what it says it is. It is just not a jobs ranking, and it is used as one constantly. The weights are identical across disciplines. The sub-metrics are not.
A common claim is that NIRF weights parameters differently for engineering, management and medical. It does not. All four frameworks we checked use the same 30/30/20/10/10 split. What genuinely changes is what sits inside Graduation Outcomes.

Three things worth noticing:
- Medical has no median salary metric at all. Graduation Outcomes there is exam results plus postgraduate and super-specialty output.
- Management weights salary far higher than engineering, 40 marks against 25, which is why B-school NIRF ranks track packages more closely.
- The Overall ranking contains no placement and no salary whatsoever. Its Graduation Outcomes is exam pass rate (60) and PhDs graduated (40). If you are picking a college for a job and you are reading the NIRF Overall list, you are reading a table with zero employment content in it.
Which parameter actually decides a rank

Perception is the real separator
The Perception gap between the top 10 and the 51 to 100 group is 59.4 points, the largest of any parameter, and Perception ranges from 0.72 to 100.00 across the table. It is a survey of academic peers and employers, worth 10% of the score, and it swings harder than anything else. Research is second at 43.3 points. Graduation Outcomes, the parameter closest to your actual job, differs by only 21.2.
Outreach and Inclusivity separates nothing
The OI gap is 1.8 points. Effectively zero. Everyone scores similarly, so it cannot move you up. Its highest scorers in 2025 are private universities ranked in the 30s to 80s, not the IITs.
How institutes optimise for it
Once you see the shares, the incentives are obvious:
- Publication count and citations are 22.5% of the score between them. This is why institutes hire on publication record and push output volume.
- FRU rewards spending, not just having. Financial resources are scored on utilisation, so unspent budget costs marks.
- FSR rewards permanent faculty specifically, which is why headcount conversions from contract to permanent tend to cluster before submission season.
- Perception cannot be engineered quickly, which is the main reason a genuinely improving institute takes years to climb.
- Everything except Perception is self-submitted by the institute in a prescribed format. NIRF runs consistency checks; it is not a full independent audit.
What this means for jobs and study abroad
For a campus placement
- Use the GO score, not the rank. Then confirm against the institute's own placement report, because GO counts higher study as an outcome too.
- Discount Perception mentally. It is 10% of the score and the single biggest reason two similar institutes sit far apart.

For an MS or a job abroad
- Foreign admissions committees do not read NIRF. They check UGC or AICTE recognition and run your transcript through their own equivalence process.
- Where NIRF is genuinely useful is RP, the research parameter. A high-RP institute has more active labs, which is what produces the publication and the recommendation letter that admissions committees do recognise. RP is 30% of the score, so it is easy to read off the table.
