NIRF Rankings 2025: Scores, Cutoffs and What They Mean for Jobs
NIRF is the Government of India's official ranking of higher education institutions, published by the Ministry of Education since 2016. It scores each institute out of 100 on five parameters, weighted 30/30/20/10/10, and publishes 14 separate category lists. The latest edition is India Rankings 2025.
NIRF publishes its rankings as per-institute PDFs with the parameter scores hidden in expandable rows. These pages turn that into tables you can actually read, then add the part NIRF leaves out: what each score predicts about a job, and what entrance rank each institute really closes at.

Reading a NIRF rank without being misled
Three things trip most people up, and all three are visible in the 2025 data:
- The rank compresses fast. Engineering runs from 88.72 at rank 1 to 45.55 at rank 100. Past the top ten, a two-point swing in one parameter moves an institute ten places. Rank 34 is not meaningfully better than rank 41.
- Placement is a small part of the score. In engineering, placement and median salary together are 13% of the total. Research is 30% and the reputation survey is 10%. If you want a jobs signal, read the Graduation Outcomes column, not the rank.
- The Overall list is not a better version of the discipline list. It contains no placement and no salary metric whatsoever, and only 56 of its top 100 also appear in the engineering ranking.
What NIRF publishes
India Rankings 2025 covers 14 categories: Overall, Engineering, Management, Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Law, Architecture and Planning, Colleges, Research, Innovation, Agriculture and Allied Sectors, Open Universities and Skill Universities. Each is ranked separately on the same five parameters, but the sub-metrics inside those parameters differ by discipline, which is why an institute's rank can move sharply between lists.
Participation is voluntary and most of the data is submitted by the institutes themselves in a prescribed format. NIRF runs consistency checks; it is not a full independent audit. Treat self-reported placement and salary figures as claims and cross-check them against the institute's own placement report.
Using a rank to make an actual decision
- Check what your rank can reach with the JoSAA predictor, built on the official closing-rank files, or browse by band: 5,000–10,000, 10,000–25,000, 25,000–50,000.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework is the Government of India's official ranking of higher education institutions, run by the Ministry of Education since 2016. It scores institutes on five parameters and publishes separate lists for engineering, management, medical and eleven other categories.
Which NIRF ranking should I use?
The discipline list that matches your course, not the Overall list. If you are applying for B.Tech, read the engineering ranking. The Overall list mixes institution types and contains no placement or salary metric at all.
Is NIRF 2026 out?
Not as of 25 August 2026. The latest published edition on nirfindia.org is India Rankings 2025. Recent editions have landed between August and September, so 2026 is due shortly, and these pages will be updated when it does.
