NIRF Medical Ranking 2025: Top Medical Colleges With Scores

This is the NIRF list most likely to mislead an applicant, and not because the data is wrong. It is measured accurately. It just measures postgraduate and research output, not the quality of an MBBS education, and most people reading it are choosing where to do MBBS.

Only 50 colleges are ranked

Engineering, management and overall each publish 100 ranked institutes plus banded entries. Medical publishes 50, and nothing else. India has several hundred medical colleges, so the overwhelming majority appear nowhere in this list.

That matters when a college tells you it is "not NIRF ranked, like most colleges". True, and it means the ranking cannot help you compare the options actually in front of you at a mid NEET rank. Absence from this table is close to meaningless.

There is no salary metric, and half of outcomes is postgraduate output

NIRF applies the same headline weights everywhere: teaching 30%, research 30%, graduation outcomes 20%, outreach 10%, perception 10%. What sits inside Graduation Outcomes is where medical diverges hardest.

Read the medical column. 30 marks for postgraduate students graduated and 20 for super-specialty graduates: half the parameter. Placement and higher studies gets 25, exam pass rate 25, and median salary does not appear at all.

So a hospital that trains many MD, DM and MCh candidates scores well here, whether or not it is a good place to spend five and a half years as an undergraduate. Our full breakdown of how NIRF scores are calculated has the sub-metric table for every discipline.

NIMHANS ranks 7th and has no MBBS programme

The clearest illustration sits at rank 7. The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences scores 69.77, with a Graduation Outcomes score of 88.87. Its own academics page lists DM, MCh, MPhil, PhD, diploma and fellowship programmes. It does not offer MBBS.

NIMHANS is a genuinely outstanding institution and deserves its rank under this framework. But a student reading "top 10 medical colleges in India" and shortlisting it for MBBS has been misled by the headline, not by NIRF. Always check the institute runs the course you are applying for.

What actually decides the order

Perception and research again, at 36.3 and 34.3 points between the top 10 and ranks 26 to 50. Graduation Outcomes separates them by only 11.9, and Outreach by 2.5.

The score gaps tell the same story from another angle: 23.75 points between rank 1 and rank 10, then just 7.9 from 10 to 25 and 9.24 from 25 to 50. AIIMS Delhi is genuinely far clear of the field. Below about rank 10 the table is tightly packed and small differences mean very little.

The colleges that beat their rank on outcomes

If your question is about undergraduate teaching and clinical exposure rather than research volume, the Graduation Outcomes column is the closest thing this framework offers. Several large government teaching colleges score higher on it than institutes ranked well above them.

Madras Medical College sits at rank 16 with a Graduation Outcomes score of 96.87, higher than every institute in the top 10 except AIIMS Delhi. What holds its total down is research (13.11) and Perception (61.61). For someone choosing where to study MBBS, that trade is worth understanding rather than ignoring.

Where the ranked colleges are

The 50 ranked institutes cluster heavily: Tamil Nadu (8), Delhi (7), Karnataka (7), Uttar Pradesh (4), Odisha (3). If you are working with a state quota, that concentration matters more to your options than the national rank order does.

Jobs and study abroad: using this list

If you are choosing an MBBS college

• Confirm the college runs MBBS. Not every institute in this table does.
• Read Graduation Outcomes and Teaching, not the rank. Research and Perception drive the order and neither describes your five and a half years.
• Weigh the government seat first. Fees at a government college are a fraction of a private or deemed one, and the ranking does not price that in anywhere.

• Against any government seat that your NEET rank can reach, the Indian route wins on cost, clinical exposure and licensing. The comparison only gets interesting against an expensive private seat.
