NIRF Management Ranking 2025: Top MBA Colleges With Scores
IIM Ahmedabad tops the NIRF Management Ranking 2025 on 83.29, ahead of IIM Bangalore (81.56) and IIM Kozhikode (79.85). 100 institutes are ranked: 21 IIMs, 8 IITs, 2 NITs and 69 private or other universities. IIT Delhi places 4th.
The management list behaves differently from the engineering one, and the difference matters if you are choosing a B-school. Salary counts for more here, but the metric that measures it has almost stopped discriminating at the top. Here is the full table and what it will and will not tell you.

Why an IIT ranks 4th on a management list
IIT Delhi sits at rank 4 with 78.94, above IIM Lucknow, IIM Mumbai and IIM Calcutta. That surprises people, and the parameter columns explain it immediately: IIT Delhi scores 87.50 on Research and Professional Practice, the highest figure in the entire management table.
Research is 30% of the score. Its Graduation Outcomes (83.30) trails every top IIM, but a research margin that large outweighs the outcomes gap. Eight IITs are ranked in management altogether.
| NIRF rank | Institute | Research (RP) | Graduation Outcomes | Perception | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | IIT Delhi | 87.50 | 83.30 | 62.59 | 78.94 |
| 12 | IIT Kharagpur | 78.53 | 83.82 | 33.51 | 66.97 |
| 13 | IIT Madras | 52.50 | 76.52 | 52.14 | 66.50 |
| 14 | IIT Bombay | 64.99 | 77.01 | 34.62 | 65.82 |
| 22 | IIT Roorkee | 54.58 | 81.04 | 22.87 | 61.77 |
| 27 | IIT Kanpur | 53.84 | 71.66 | 29.03 | 60.15 |
| 48 | IIT (Indian School of Mines) | 41.49 | 66.07 | 17.32 | 54.34 |
| 98 | IIT Jodhpur | 17.44 | 79.18 | 3.82 | 45.02 |
Whether that is the right way to rank a management programme is a fair question. If you are choosing an MBA for a career outcome, an institute carried this far by publication output is not automatically the better choice. Read the Graduation Outcomes column beside the rank.
Salary counts for more here than in engineering
NIRF applies the same headline weights to every discipline: teaching 30%, research 30%, graduation outcomes 20%, outreach 10%, perception 10%. What changes is what sits inside those parameters, and Graduation Outcomes is where management differs most:
- Management: placement and higher studies 40 marks, median salary 40, exam results 20.
- Engineering: placement and higher studies 40, median salary 25, exam results 15, PhDs graduated 20.
So median salary is worth 8% of a management total against 5% of an engineering one. A management rank tracks money more closely than an engineering rank does. Our breakdown of how NIRF scores are calculated has the full sub-metric table.
But Graduation Outcomes has run out of room
Here is the catch. Median Graduation Outcomes across the management list is 79.47, against 69.27 for engineering. At the top the metric is effectively saturated.
| GO score | Institute | NIRF rank | Perception | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 99.84 | IIM Mumbai | 6 | 62.03 | 77.58 |
| 98.87 | IIM Calcutta | 7 | 85.23 | 77.34 |
| 98.86 | IIM Bangalore | 2 | 100.00 | 81.56 |
| 98.83 | S.P. Jain Institute of Management | 20 | 20.19 | 62.06 |
| 98.72 | IIM Ahmedabad | 1 | 93.26 | 83.29 |
| 96.96 | IIM Lucknow | 5 | 75.51 | 77.97 |
| 95.96 | IIM Shillong | 38 | 29.28 | 57.70 |
| 95.35 | IIM Kozhikode | 3 | 74.26 | 79.85 |
IIM Mumbai scores 99.84. Calcutta 98.87, Bangalore 98.86, Ahmedabad 98.72. When six schools sit inside a point and a half of each other on the parameter that is supposed to measure outcomes, that parameter is no longer separating them. It tells you they all place their graduates well, which you already knew.
The consequence: a school's rank inside the top 10 is decided almost entirely elsewhere.
What actually decides the order
| Parameter | Top 10 mean | Ranks 51–100 mean | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perception | 67.8 | 12.2 | 55.6 |
| Research (RP) | 62.7 | 22.7 | 40.0 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 95.6 | 72.4 | 23.2 |
| Teaching (TLR) | 85.0 | 66.8 | 18.2 |
| Outreach (OI) | 72.9 | 66.1 | 6.8 |
Perception, by a wide margin, at a 55.6-point mean gap between the top 10 and ranks 51 to 100. Research follows at 40.0. Graduation Outcomes differs by 23.2 and Outreach by just 6.8.
The reputation survey is 10% of the score and it is doing most of the sorting. That is worth knowing before you treat rank 9 as clearly better than rank 15. IIM Raipur sits at rank 15 with a Perception score of 16.66; MDI Gurgaon at rank 9 scores 24.01. Neither number reflects the education.
Score gaps: where the list stops meaning anything
- Rank 1 to 10: 12.66 points
- Rank 10 to 50: 16.55 points
- Rank 50 to 100: 9.55 points
Unusually, the steepest drop is not at the top. The top 10 are packed inside 12.66 points, then the table falls away sharply through the 10 to 50 band. Practical reading: the top 10 is a genuine peer group, and the difference between rank 12 and rank 45 is real. That is the opposite of the engineering list, where the top 10 separate cleanly and the middle compresses.
Who is in the list
| Type | Count | Best rank | Mean GO | Mean Perception |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private and other universities | 69 | 9 | 74.9 | 13.9 |
| IIMs | 21 | 1 | 91.1 | 45.5 |
| IITs | 8 | 4 | 77.3 | 32.0 |
| NITs | 2 | 57 | 69.5 | 17.2 |
The IIM advantage on Graduation Outcomes is real and large: 91.1 mean against 74.9 for the private and university group. On Perception the gap is wider still, which is the part that is a survey rather than a measurement.
Jobs and study abroad: using this list
If you are choosing an Indian MBA
- Inside the top 10, ignore the rank order. They are within 12.66 points and Graduation Outcomes cannot separate them. Choose on location, sector strength, cohort and fee.
- Below rank 10, the rank starts carrying information, because the score falls away quickly through the middle band.
- Check the fee against the median package, not the highest. A payback longer than about three years on median salary is where the case weakens. Run it in the payback calculator.
- Watch for research-carried ranks. An institute high on RP and mid on GO is a strong research school, not necessarily a strong placement one.
If you are weighing an MBA abroad
- A one-year international MBA competes directly with the two-year Indian programme on total cost, and the comparison turns on post-study work rights rather than rankings. Our MBA ROI: India vs abroad runs those numbers.
- If you are taking CAT anyway, CAT for an MBA abroad covers which international programmes accept the score and where GMAT is still required.
- Considering product management rather than a general MBA? Product manager with or without an MBA compares the two study paths on outcome.
What to do next
- Shortlist on Graduation Outcomes and fee, not rank, if your goal is a job.
- Read the sub-metric weights in how NIRF scores are calculated so you know what a rank is actually made of.
- Compare against the abroad route in the payback calculator before committing to a two-year fee.
- Cross-check the engineering list if you are weighing an MBA against a technical master's: NIRF Engineering 2025.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the top NIRF-ranked management institute in 2025?
IIM Ahmedabad, with a total score of 83.29, ahead of IIM Bangalore (81.56) and IIM Kozhikode (79.85). IIM Bangalore takes a perfect 100 on Perception, the only institute in the list to do so.
Why is IIT Delhi ranked 4th in the NIRF management list?
Because research counts for 30% of the score and IIT Delhi posts 87.50 on it, the highest in the entire management table. Its Graduation Outcomes (83.30) trails every top IIM, but the research margin is large enough to put it above IIM Lucknow, Mumbai and Calcutta.
How many IIMs are in the NIRF management top 100?
21 IIMs are ranked, alongside 8 IITs, 2 NITs and 69 private or other universities. The IIMs average 91.1 on Graduation Outcomes against 74.9 for the private and university group.
Does the NIRF management ranking reflect placements?
More than the engineering ranking does. Median salary is worth 40 marks of Graduation Outcomes in the management framework against 25 in engineering, so salary carries 8% of a management total versus 5% of an engineering one. The catch is that GO is saturated at the top, where every leading school scores between 94 and 100.
What separates the top management institutes from the rest?
Perception and research, not outcomes. Between the top 10 and ranks 51 to 100 the mean Perception gap is 55.6 points and research 40.0, while Graduation Outcomes differs by 23.2 and Outreach by only 6.8.
