Lists of undervalued colleges usually run to twenty or thirty names and cite nothing. We set a single testable bar — beat the top 30’s median salary of Rs 1,427,500 and its placement rate of 76.8% — and applied it to every ranked institute below rank 30. Six clear it on pay. Four clear it on both.

IIIT Hyderabad is the standout, and not only for its tier. Its median of Rs 3,200,000 is the highest of any institute in the entire ranked engineering list, top 30 included, and it sits at rank 38.
Notice what the list is made of. Almost every name is either an IIIT or a Delhi institute: specialised computing schools and well-located ones. This is not a random scatter of underrated colleges. It is a type.
Why they rank where they do

The explanation is entirely in the first two rows. These institutes score 32.9 on research against 60.9 for the top 30, and 19.7 on Perception against 44.3. Those two parameters carry 40% of the NIRF total between them.
On Graduation Outcomes, the parameter closest to employment, they are much closer. And their median graduating cohort is 254 against 966 for the top 30. They are small, specialised and young, which is precisely what a framework built around research volume and institutional reputation is worst at valuing.
None of that is an error in NIRF. It is measuring what it says it measures, as our breakdown of how the scores are calculated sets out. It just means the rank answers a different question from the one an applicant is asking.
The trap: a high placement rate on its own
Set the salary condition aside and the picture changes completely. 19 institutes outside the top 30 beat its placement rate, and most of them are nothing like a bargain.

Two of these place more than 92% of their graduating cohort, which is how they appear in advertising. They rank where they do on research volume and outreach rather than on pay. A top-30 rank does not guarantee top-30 money, and the parameter columns say so before the placement report does.
How to use this
- Set a bar before you look. “Good placements” means nothing; “beats the median of the tier above on both pay and rate” is checkable.
- Require both numbers. Either alone is gameable, and the placement rate is the one that gets gamed.
- Ask why the rank is low. Low research and Perception with strong outcomes is a defensible trade. Low Graduation Outcomes is not.

Placement counts and median salaries come from the per-institute data sheets NIRF publishes for every ranked institute, for example IIT Madras (IR-E-U-0456), downloaded 26 August 2026, four-year UG block, 2023-24 graduating cohort. Parameter scores and ranks come from the NIRF 2025 engineering table. Of the 100 ranked institutes, 96 parsed successfully, 30 of them inside the top 30 and 66 below it; the rest are excluded rather than estimated, so an institute missing here may simply have an unparsed sheet.
